I am Peter Griffiths, the managing director of Watkin & Williams Ltd, and my wife Moira, son Andrew and son-in-law Graeme Smith are directors of our independent shop. My daughter Tracy Smith rejoined the family business in 2011, soon after my daughter-in-law Gurby, who helps with maintaining the website and promoting us in the local media, officially joined the family in March 2011. We have been serving customers from the area and visitors to Llangollen since 1998.

It all started when we saw the shop for sale, which was 4 Berwyn Street (next door), a small but an interesting little shop selling cookery items, decorating and partly hardware items. We decided to take the plunge and buy the business, which then was about 120 sq ft. This was 1998 and we found ourselves around one year later in 1999 employing Andrew and our new little business was steadily growing.

I thought at the time there was an opportunity to expand the business even further and bought a van as we had been making small deliveries with our car and now needed something a bit bigger. Some 18 months later came our tipper allowing us to deliver timber, coal, sand and cement to local businesses.

Today, we have seven employees and have increased our sales floor area to about 500sq ft, adding motor factors, camping equipment and pet supplies to our range of products. Our client base has grown and we make regular local deliveries as far as Corwen, Ruthin, Wrexham, Chirk, Oswestry and, of course, around Llangollen.
